Certain blood-thinning and anticoagulation medications may need to be stopped before having an interventional procedure. This is to reduce the risk of excess bleeding.

Please refer to the table and information below as a guide for ceasing anticoagulation and blood-thinning medications prior to having an interventional procedure.

Before ceasing any medications, you must obtain approval from your Doctor.

Preparation for your procedure should be confirmed at the time of booking.

*Cease if possible. Discuss with our radiologist or your referring doctor.

When Ceasing Medications:

Warfarin

• Cease 5 days prior to procedure
• Get an INR blood test on the morning of the day before the procedure
• Copy of results need to be sent to our practice (INR < 1.5 = Safe)

Pradaxa  (Dabigatran)

• Cease for 3 days prior

Aspirin / Platelet Inhibitors (Plavix, Iscover, Effient, Ticlopidine, Persantin)

• Cease for 7 days prior

Clexane

• Cease for 24 hours prior

NSAID’S & Cox 2 Inhibitors (Celebrex)

• Never need to cease

Resuming Medications:

All anticoagulation and blood-thinning medication can be resumed straight after the procedure, unless otherwise advised.

We recommend that you see your doctor a week after the procedure to readjust your Warfarin dosage.
